Before dawn on Monday (March 8, 2010) Turkey was hit by a 6.0-magnitude earthquake. The epicenter of the earthquake was located at the village of Basyurt, causing at least 57 killed people in an instant. This earthquake was the second time in the history of Eastern Turkey, the first was the 6.4-magnitude earthquake that hit the village near the Basyurt, the Bingol, which killed 160 people.
The Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan said that the main material of building the common buildings in the Basyurt was the main reason why the earthquake killed a lot of people – the sun-dried bricks.
“Unfortunately, houses made of sun-dried brick constitute the architecture in the region,” said Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan. The sun-dried bricks or the mud-bricks were commonly used in the area. And these bricks were easily damaged by the 6.0-magnitude earthquake.
The Prime Minister of Turkey said that they got a lesson learned and they need to reconstruct the village in a new way – using mud-bricks no more.
“We have given necessary directives to the provincial authorities to change the architectural structure.”
Earthquake-resistant materials should be always used in countries that suffer from frequent earthquakes like Turkey. And this is one of the biggest idea that the Turkish Prime Minister thought of to resolve the problem and to prevent more killings of the deadly earthquakes.
