Six Killed in Upper Big Branch Mine Blast

Six killed and 21 miners still left in the Upper Big Branch mine blast area which occurred last Monday, April 5, 2010. Officials said that the Upper Big Branch mine blast occurred at about 3:00 p.m. and they said that the possible cause of the mine explosion is the methane gas built up in a sealed off area of the mine.

Rep. Nick J. Rahall II arrived in the blast site which is located in his district said that the Upper Big Branch mine blast is the second major disaster in a Massey site. Massey Energy is the company who owns the Upper Big Branch mine. And the Performance Coal Company is the operator.

The United Mine Workers of America dispatched teams to help the families of the trapped miners in Upper Big Branch even the mine is not a part of their union. The Massey Energy is now searching for the 21 missing miners too.
