With the recent trends seen in the the personal digicam industry over the last several years, it’s hard to believe that just a short while ago HD video seemed out of reach for all but a handful of people outside of the film industry, requiring expensive software and hardware to perform edits, to distribute, and even to watch. As we roll into 2011, even almost every entry-level digicam offers the capability to shoot video in HD. What’s more, a handful of products exist solely as cheap video cameras, capable of capturing video and getting it online within a matter of minutes; the most prominent of these is the Flip camera, which has become almost synonymous with quickly-made, citizen-produced video.

Sony’s entry into this field is the Bloggie. It’s a compact camera measuring 1 and 9/16″ by 4″ by 2 3/4″ and weighing 6.9 ounces, making it easy to transport in a pocket or in a bag (Flip cameras measure between 1.97″ by 3.94″ by .63″ and 2.19″ by 4.25″ by 1.17″ and weigh between 4.1 and 5.7 ounces, depending on featuresets, making them on average very slightly smaller and lighter).

The Bloggie differs from the Flip in a handful of ways. For one, it captures images at a maximum resolution of 1920 by 1080, larger than the 1280 by 720 offered by the Flip. It also stores video and still images onto Sony’s memory stick format, rather than built-in solid state media. While this adds costs beyond the initial purchase, it also makes it very easy to continue shooting in the event that the camera gets full, which cannot be done as conveniently on the Flip. However, several Flip models offer the choice to be powered either via a rechargeable battery pack or via AA or AAA batteries; the Bloggie can only be powered by a proprietary rechargeable battery pack, making travel away from a computer somewhat difficult and impractical with both, though for different reasons.

Additionally, Flip’s cameras all offer wide-range stereo microphones or omnidirectional microphones, while the Bloggie only captures audio in mono. Sony’s lens offers a more substantive zoom, as large as 20x, and a focal length equivalent to a 35mm camera’s range of 41 and 205mm. Both models offer limited control, like most entry-level digicams. Features such as white balance and image stabilization, as well as low light detection, are automatic in both models, and the Bloggie doesn’t offer any manual focusing. The Bloggie has a larger LCD screen than most Flip cameras (most Flips are 2″, the Bloggie is 2.5″), but many features are very similar; both offer easy uploading to video sharing services, integrated USB 2.0 ports for fast data transfers, and charging via USB to eliminate the frustrations associated with cables.

For the most part, the biggest factor in determining which is right for a prospective buyer is the amount of video one wants to store. If it’s more than a few hours, external storage may be a huge advantage, and this should seal the deal in the Bloggie’s favor. If that isn’t your primary point of concern, the cameras are very similar.

You probably don’t think of Kanye West as a generous person, and with good reason. His newest album, My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy, is the sound of a relentless perfectionist realizing something massive, warped, vicious, and all-encompassing, taking only a few seconds to breathe between his bombastic and gaudy orchestral productions. Leading up to the album, he made headlines not so much for the music he’d been making but for all-caps outbursts on his blog and on Twitter and the public equivalent, outbursts like his rant over Taylor Swift’s acceptance speech at the 2009 MTV VMAs.

Yet Kanye West spent several months before the realization of his Dark Twisted Fantasy releasing free music online through his GOOD Fridays series, offering teaser singles, B-sides, and other material every Friday from August through the end of January (with a few weeks missed following the album’s release). He used the service first to release a remix of the album’s first single, Power, which added new verses from Jay-Z and Swizz Beatz as well as a detour into C&C Music Factory’s “The Power” in its second half, then premiered “Monster,” “So Appalled,” “Devil in a New Dress,” and several other songs that ended up becoming part of the album.

Through this, West used the program on a few occasions to reveal what were essentially works in progress; the finished album versions of several songs ended up changed considerably from the versions that he released through GOOD Fridays, most notably the addition of Rick Ross’s verse to “Devil in a New Dress.” However, he also showed his seemingly long-absent goofball side by tackling projects such as a remix of Justin Bieber’s “Runaway Love” with Wu-Tang Clan member Raekwon, and later extended something of an olive branch to critics within Dipset by featuring Cam’ron and Jim Jones on year-ender “Christmas in Harlem.”

Users who followed him on Twitter would see West writing frantically on Friday nights about how he was running late and working to get something out for the series on several occasions, and many of the tracks that didn’t become part of the new album are utterly worth hearing, such as “Chain Heavy” (which features production from Tribe Called Quest MC Q-Tip), “Lord Lord Lord” (which prompted Mos Def to announce his now being signed to GOOD Music, West‘s record label that’s had successes with Common and John Legend, among others).

Most importantly, it’s further evidence of West‘s strengths as an innovator in his field. Since GOOD Fridays started, countless producers and rappers have started similar projects: Timbaland began “Timbo Thursdays,” Swizz Beats took on “Monsta Mondays” and Wu-Tang mastermind RZA (who is featured, perhaps not incidentally, on “So Appalled”) is releasing music on “Wu Wednesdays.” However, none of these have attracted quite the momentum of excitement that Kanye has to this point. As he finishes up the series in the next several weeks and moves on to his collaborative album with Jay-Z, Watch The Throne, it’s hard not to be excited about what he’ll be doing next, outbursts and all.

WWDC 2010 Coverage Update – the leaked iPhone is here, and it’s official. The recent Apple WWDC 2010 event just announced the newest refresh of iPhone hardware, the iPhone 4 – with front facing camera and more new features.

The much-anticipated and much-awaited event of the year for Apple fanboys and tech savvies out there has just begun. And today, the newest iPhone 4 was just revealed. The newest iPhone 4′s design was compared to an old Leica camera by Steve Jobs, with a glass front and back. It will also be available in black and white colors. One of the newest feature of iPhone 4 is its Front Facing camera, and Apple call it “FaceTime”. The newest front facing camera of the iPhone 4 will enable video chatting, but as of now, the video chat will be only available on WiFi only and iPhone 4 to iPhone 4 only. Another new cool feature of iPhone 4 is the revamped camera. It’s now a 5 megapixel camera with 5x digital zoom and with LED Flash. The new 5 megapixel camera of the iPhone 4 can now shoot 720p/30fps video on the go.

The iPhone 4 will be launched this coming weeks and will be available starting June 24th. iPhone 16GB will be at $199 and $299 for the 32GB version. The new iPhone will launch this coming June 24 on five different countries (US, UK, France, Germany and Japan) and will be launched in 18 other countries in July.
